Local Observation Strategy

As a regional observation basecamp, Stuttgart offers the essential amenities needed before heading into the isolated darkness of Log Cabins. It marks the transition where the suburban light dome finally gives way to the true wilderness sky.

The Best Times for Stargazing in Stuttgart

While Summer offers the most consistent clear nights for Stuttgart, wait for the 4-day window surrounding the New Moon each month for the deepest contrast. Since the sun sets early in the late Summer months, you can often begin deep-sky imaging as early as 7 PM.

Expert Tips for Stuttgart Observers

When observing from Oley E Rooker Library, try to position yourself facing away from the nearest major light dome. For Stuttgart residents, this usually means looking toward the rural horizons of AR to capture the lowest magnitude stars that are normally invisible from the city center. Scientific Context: While local conditions vary, the instrumented reading of Bortle 6 at Log Cabins (249.4 miles away) remains the benchmark for regional sky quality.

Regional Perspective: Observers in Stuttgart often prefer their local clearings over Pine Bluff for spontaneous stargazing, thanks to a shorter commute into the dark zones.

" For the dedicated Stuttgart observer, this spot offers a superior escape from light pollution. Next, we will go over the features of the library's loaner Orion Star blast tabletop telescope so you can look at the moon with this easy to use Newtonian reflector. If the sky is clear, we'll go outside to the parking lot and see what we can see with our eyes and also use the volunteers' telescopes. "

Local Relevance

For observers in Stuttgart, Log Cabins serves as the definitive baseline for high-altitude transparency and localized skyglow data.

"Only fair transparency and seeing. Some fast moving clouds. High humidity. Milky Way visible from 20 degrees above north horizon. Great rift visible, Saggitarius cloud not easily visible, Scutum cloud not visible. Milky Way about 10-12 degrees wide, but faint and no fine details. To the NW a blue white light dome easily seen. Due East is the Clarksville lightdome almost 25 degrees high and 15 degrees wide. Core is bright. Adjacent to the light dome is a spotlight (which we determined was coming from the cemetary here in FODO park)."
